Federação do Folclore Português2026

Portuguese Folklore Federation

Since 14 January 2026, the Pauliteiros de Sendim have officially been part of the Portuguese Folklore Federation, becoming the only Pauliteiros de Miranda group to be a member of the Federation.

This membership is an important recognition of the group’s work to preserve, value and share the traditional culture of Miranda, and it strengthens the presence of the Pauliteiros de Sendim in the national folklore movement.

Joining the Federation means closer ties with groups and associations across the country, opening new opportunities to share, learn and represent the Mirandese tradition.

More than a distinction, it is a commitment: to keep preserving what we received from earlier generations and to make sure the dances, music, costumes and customs of the Pauliteiros de Miranda stay alive and are passed on to the next generations.

The Ritual Dances of the Pauliteiros de Miranda are listed in Portugal’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, officially recognising their value as a living expression of the culture and identity of the Miranda region.

This listing recognises a tradition handed down from generation to generation, bringing together dance, music, costumes, rituals and forms of community participation deeply rooted in Mirandese culture.

More than preserving a set of dances, the recognition aims to safeguard the whole cultural world of the Pauliteiros de Miranda, so that their knowledge, practices and meanings stay alive and can be passed on to future generations.

For the Pauliteiros de Sendim, being part of this tradition also means taking on the responsibility to preserve, practise and share this heritage, keeping it connected to the community where it was born and where it is still lived.
